In recent years, the government renamed the “Bangabandhu Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament” and the “Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament” for students in government primary schools.
“Primary School Gold Cup Football Tournament (Boys and Girls)” is the new name for the competitions.
On Tuesday, the Directorate of Primary Education notified educational institutions and field-level officials about the tournament’s name change.
“This decision is based on policy. A few days ago, the ministry made the decision to change the name. Farid Ahammad, secretary of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, stated, “We wrote to the Directorate of Primary Education to take the necessary action in this regard.”
For primary students attending government schools, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has been hosting the “Bangabandhu Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament” since 2010 and the “Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament” since 2011.
However, the start of the coronavirus pandemic prevented the tournaments from taking place in 2020 and 2021.
This year, 65,566 schools and 1.7 million students participated in the tournament. Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister, was present at the April final matches.
Since the Hasina government fell on August 5, numerous sectors have undergone reforms, and as a result, the tournaments have changed their names.
After deciding to rename the tournament, the ministry sent a letter to the DPE’s field officers asking them to take the appropriate steps, DPE Assistant Director Mohammad Nazrul Islam told bdnews24.com.
The ministry signed an order on November 7 notifying the directorate of the tournament’s name change. He instructed the field-level officers to take appropriate action.
