The Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s decision to dismiss Muhammad Yunus, the interim government’s chief advisor, from five labor law cases.
Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam presided over a three-member Appellate Division bench that rendered the decision on Sunday.
Prior to this, on October 24, the High Court ended hearings on individual petitions submitted by Yunus and canceled the five cases’ proceedings.
The state filed five different petitions with the Appellate Division to request permission to appeal the High Court’s ruling. The Appellate Division heard the petitions and then dismissed them.
Senior attorney Mustafa Rezwan Khan represented Yunus in the proceedings, while Additional Attorney General Aneek R. Haque represented the state.
In 2019, Yunus faced lawsuits while serving as the chairman of Grameen Telecom. The lawsuits asserted that Yunus had wrongfully fired workers.
At first, Yunus submitted petitions to the High Court, hoping to halt the legal proceedings.
At several points during the preliminary hearings, the High Court issued interim rulings. It rendered its final decision on October 24 and dismissed the cases.
