BNP Expresses Disappointment Over CA’s Statement on Upcoming Elections

The BNP has voiced its displeasure that Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus’ recent speech on the election schedule lacked a specific election date.

“We anticipated that within a given time frame, the chief adviser would present a clear roadmap. At a press conference held this morning at the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated, “He failed to do so, which has disappointed us as well as the nation.”

“The Election Commission has already been formed, and there is no reason for a delay in holding the elections,” Fakhrul stated, emphasizing their importance. We can hold the polls once we complete the necessary reforms. Thus, the BNP anticipates that the chief adviser will make a clear statement on the subject.

The “contradictory statements” that Yunus and his press secretary made about the election schedule were also criticized by Fakhrul.

“The press secretary subsequently said the election could take place in June 2026, although the chief adviser had previously mentioned late 2025 or January 2026. Confusion will result from these contradictory statements,” he stated.

“In this case, we are unsure of which statement is true. We’re disappointed, and it doesn’t make sense,” Fakhrul continued.

He cited a discussion at yesterday’s meeting of the BNP Standing Committee, where members decided that discussions with political parties and other stakeholders should be used to determine the election timeline.

“The address to the nation on election-related matters was vague,” Fakhrul said in response to Yunus’ speech. Although it alluded to a potential election schedule, it lacked a detailed plan.
