In Tongi, Gazipur, the Bailey Bridge collapsed, causing a truck to fall into the Turag River.
The Gazipur Metropolitan Police advises alternate routes.
The bridge collapsed early on Saturday morning while a freight truck carrying stones was crossing it, according to GMP deputy police commissioner Ibrahim Khan.
He said that police rushed to the scene as soon as they received the incident report.
The Roads and Highways Department has received notification and will take the necessary action, according to a police official.
It’s possible that the bridge collapsed because of too much weight on it, according to Liakat Akbar, additional commissioner of the Gazipur Traffic (South) Police. The truck driver sustained minor injuries in the collision after rescue and transport to Tongi Hospital.
There are still other routes available even though the bridge has collapsed.
In order to save hassle, the GMP posted a traffic update on Facebook, advising anyone traveling through the area to take a different route.
It read: “Honorable passengers, this morning the Bailey Bridge’s Mymensingh-bound lane at Tongi on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway collapsed. We kindly ask that all travelers and vehicles following this route take the alternate route via Kamarpara Munnugate rather than crossing the Tongi bridge.
KM Shariful Alam, the executive engineer for the Gazipur Roads and Highways Department, was not available for comment despite multiple attempts to reach him.
