Two Killed in Speedboat Collision with Freight Vessel in Munshiganj

Two people were killed and another was injured after a speedboat collided with a freight vessel on the Meghna River in Gajaria, Munshiganj.

The incident took place around 9:30 p.m. on Friday near Kalipura Dock, as reported by Anowar Alam Azad, the chief of Gajaria Police Station.

One of the deceased has been identified as Wadud from South Jamalpur village in Gajaria’s Guagachia union. The other victim, named Babul, has yet to have his address confirmed by police.

The injured person, Halim, is also from South Jamalpur.

All three individuals are known by their single names.

According to Anowar, the speeding speedboat crashed into the freight vessel, which had been anchored at the river. Locals rescued the victims and took them to Gajaria Upazila Health Complex, where two were declared dead. The third victim, severely injured, was transferred to Bhaberchar Health Complex.

“We’ve heard reports of more missing or deceased individuals since the incident, but we have not confirmed these claims yet,” Anowar stated.

“It is believed that some of the victims were involved in illegal sand mining on the Meghna and had ties to pirates operating in the area. Those responsible have since fled,” he added.

The bodies of the deceased are now in police custody.
