Sarjis Alam, the student leader who played a pivotal role in the movement that led to the fall of the Awami League regime, announced that he is stepping down from his position as General Secretary of the July Martyrs’ Memorial Foundation, citing his inability to dedicate sufficient time to the work.
In a Facebook post, Sarjis, who was also a convenor of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement during the July uprising, shared his decision. He also clarified that the position of “general secretary” will no longer exist at the foundation following his resignation.
Attempts to reach Sarjis for further comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls. Saidur Rahman Shahid, who was on duty at the July Martyrs’ Memorial Foundation call centre, confirmed, “Sarjis Bhai has not been involved with the foundation for some time. What he mentioned in his post is accurate.”
Sarjis elaborated on his decision, stating that it was driven by his growing inability to allocate the necessary time to his responsibilities. “I served the foundation as long as I could devote my full time. Once I realised I could no longer dedicate the required time, I chose to step down,” he explained.
