The nameplates of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka have been replaced with signboards reading “Bangladesh Medical University.”
A visit to the site on Saturday revealed that the previous signboard at BSMMU’s C-block had been removed and substituted with one bearing the new name. A similar signboard had been placed over the old one at the D-block.
An Ansar member stationed at BSMMU told bdnews24.com, “We saw the name boards changed in the morning. We do not know who did it.”
Speaking to a BSMMU official, bdnews24.com learned that on Saturday night, BSMMU doctors, officials, employees, and members of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement removed the old nameplates and put up the new signboards.
BSMMU Hospital Director Brig Gen Abu Noman Mohammad Mosleh Uddin told bdnews24.com on Saturday that they had not received any official directive to change the signboards.
“There was some… reform movement going on for the past two days. Maybe they put it up. Perhaps they do not want the previous name. But officially, the name has not changed. We are not removing the signboard immediately; we are monitoring the situation,” he said.
During last year’s student uprising on August 5, protestors removed the name “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib” from BSMMU signboards and other structures.
