The National Citizens’ Committee has called for Home Advisor Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury to apologise and resign following the attack on students at the residence of former Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque in Gazipur.
The activists also demanded the resignation of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner and the local deputy commissioner.
Ali Naser Khan, a central organiser for the NCC, made the demand at 11:30 am on Saturday during a rally organised by the organisation’s Gazipur district and metropolitan wings at the city’s Bhawal Rajbari field.
Ali stated that those involved in the attack on students and the public at Mozammel’s residence on Friday night must be swiftly arrested and given exemplary punishments after quick trials.
The NCC leader claimed that despite notifying the police and local administration about the attack, authorities arrived late at the scene.
He set a 24-hour deadline for the arrest of those involved in the attack and their swift prosecution.
The rally was attended by members of various student and social organisations, as well as the general public. They also participated in a protest march through the city in the afternoon.
The attack allegedly took place in front of former minister and Gazipur Awami League President Mozammel’s house in the Dhirasram Dakhinkhan area of the city at 9 pm on Friday, after allegations that a crowd had attacked and vandalised the residence. At least 15 students were injured in the incident.
The injured students were initially admitted to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur, and by around 1 am, seven victims with severe injuries were transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
