A bus crash in southern Mexico in the early hours of Saturday morning claimed the lives of 41 people, according to a statement from the Tabasco state government. Recovery operations are still ongoing.
The bus, carrying 48 passengers, collided with a truck, resulting in the deaths of 38 passengers and two bus drivers. The truck driver also lost his life in the crash, local authorities reported.
Reuters images show the bus completely burned out after being engulfed in flames following the collision, leaving only the skeletal remains of its metal frame standing.
“So far, only 18 skulls have been confirmed, but much more is missing,” said security sources from Tabasco, speaking anonymously. Recovery work continues at the scene.
Bus operator Tours Acosta expressed deep sorrow over the incident in a Facebook post, stating that it is cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the accident and whether the bus was within the speed limit at the time of the crash.
