Jamaat-e-Islami Holds First Meeting with Election Commission in a Decade

Jamaat-e-Islami held its first meeting with the Election Commission (EC) in a decade on Thursday, as part of its ongoing reform efforts and preparations for upcoming elections.

The six-member delegation, led by Jamaat’s Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, visited the EC headquarters. The delegation also included Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad. The meeting was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, alongside election commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Begum Tahmida Ahmad, Anwarul Islam Sarkar, and Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah.

This marks the first formal engagement between Jamaat and the EC since its registration was revoked in 2013. Prior to this, the party’s representatives had only visited the EC Secretariat to submit annual audit reports when it was still registered.

Before the meeting, Porwar told reporters, “We are here to discuss our views with the chief election commissioner and other officials. We will share the details with the media afterward.”

This meeting follows a similar discussion held on Sunday when a three-member BNP delegation met with the EC to talk about preparations for the 13th parliamentary elections.

After that meeting, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan shared that the talks focused on the commission’s ongoing activities and its preparations for the upcoming elections. He also mentioned that the commission aims to complete the voter list updates and be fully ready for the elections by May or June.
