India’s Modi says Trump has ‘clear roadmap’ in second term

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that US President Donald Trump is “far more prepared” for his second term, equipped with a clear roadmap, during a podcast interview released on Sunday, just weeks ahead of the reciprocal tariffs planned by Washington.

India is among the countries facing these tariffs, which could negatively affect its exporters in industries ranging from automobiles to agriculture, set to take effect in April.

Following a recent meeting between Modi and Trump, both nations agreed to resolve tariff disputes and work toward the first phase of a trade deal by the fall of 2025, with a goal of reaching a two-way trade of $500 billion by 2030.

“This time, he seems far more prepared than before,” Modi said, referring to Trump’s second term, which began in January. “He has a clear roadmap in his mind with well-defined steps, each one designed to lead him toward his goals,” he added.

During the over three-hour discussion with American computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman, Modi touched on topics ranging from diplomacy and artificial intelligence to his early life, with Fridman calling it one of the most “powerful” conversations of his life.

Modi commended Trump for his graciousness and humility, highlighting the strong bond between the two leaders.

“His (Trump’s) reflection showed his ‘America First’ spirit, just as I believe in nation first. I stand for India first, and that’s why we connect so well,” Modi said.

Regarding India’s relations with its neighbors, Modi noted that ties with China improved last year after a historic agreement to ease military tensions along their Himalayan border, following discussions between Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Russia.

“Slowly but surely, trust, enthusiasm, and energy will return,” Modi said, as both countries work to restore relations to their pre-2020 state, following a military skirmish. “But of course, it will take some time, since there’s been a five-year gap,” he added, emphasizing that the focus should be on ensuring their differences do not escalate into disputes.

On relations with archrival Pakistan, Modi expressed hope for peace.

“Every noble attempt at fostering peace was met with hostility and betrayal,” he said, adding, “we sincerely hope that wisdom prevails upon them and they choose the path of peace.”

Requests for comment from China’s and Pakistan’s foreign ministries went unanswered.
