Three Teenagers Arrested Over Murder of Primeasia University Student Zahidul Islam Parvez

Police have detained three teenagers in connection with the murder of Zahidul Islam Parvez, a student of Primeasia University.

The arrests were made during a late-night raid on Sunday in the Wireless Gate area of Dhaka’s Mohakhali, according to Rasel Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Banani Police Station.

The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Md Al Kamal Sheikh, also known as Kamal, 19; Alvi Hossain Junaid, 19; and Al Alim Sunny, 19.

None of the arrestees are enrolled at Primeasia University, nor are their names listed among the accused in the official case documents.

OC Rasel stated, “CCTV footage showed the three arrestees were present at the scene. Initially, we have learnt that they were involved in the murder. Based on information obtained from the detainees, we are trying to arrest the named suspects in the case and the others involved.”

Banani Police Station Inspector (Operations) AKM Moinuddin added, “None of the three arrestees are students at the university. They are school friends of the main three suspects. The arrestees and the three suspects all studied at the Banani Bidyaniketan School. They went to the scene that day after they were called by the suspects.”

He further mentioned that the three youths are currently preparing to apply for university admissions.

Zahidul Islam Parvez, a student of the 223rd batch in the Textile Engineering Department, was fatally stabbed on Saturday afternoon during a knife attack reportedly sparked by a dispute among students on Primeasia University’s Banani campus. According to his fellow students from the Textile Department, Parvez was attacked by outsiders over a minor issue while sitting and chatting at a nearby tea shop.

Following the murder, a case was filed by Parvez’s cousin, Humayun Kabir. The complaint lists eight named suspects, including two individuals associated with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Additionally, 25 to 30 unnamed individuals were accused.

The named suspects are: Mehraj Islam (20), Abu Zar Gifari Pias (20), Mahathir Hasan (20), Sobhan Niaz Tushar (24), Hridoy Miyazi (23), Rifat (21), Ali (21), and Fahim (22).

Among them, Tushar is mentioned in the complaint as the joint convener of the Banani Thana unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, while Hridoy Miyazi is identified as the unit’s joint member secretary.

At a press briefing on Sunday, Chhatra Dal claimed that leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement from Banani were involved in the killing and identified Parvez as one of their activists.

In response, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement rejected the claims in a statement posted on Facebook, asserting that Chhatra Dal was spreading false information and that their leaders had no involvement in the incident.
