‘Hotline’ for Protection of Foreign Investors to Be Launched

Bangladesh Police has announced plans to introduce a dedicated “hotline” for foreign investors, allowing them to request immediate police assistance in case of any untoward incident.

The decision was made during a meeting on Monday chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, according to a press release from the Chief Advisor’s Office.

Top executives from foreign firms—such as Nestlé Bangladesh, Coca-Cola Bangladesh Beverages, Unilever Bangladesh, Bata, Reckitt Benckiser Bangladesh, PepsiCo, and Jubilant FoodWorks Bangladesh—also attended the meeting. Their companies had faced attacks and vandalism during nationwide protests on Apr 7 and 8 against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Police reported that at least 140 individuals were arrested and more than a dozen cases filed following those incidents.

BIDA Executive Chairman Mahmud said, “This joint meeting of the IGP, senior police officials, and our BIDA team with business leaders is not just symbolic—it sends a strong message. The Bangladesh government stands by its investors and is committed to supporting them through this crisis.”

“These companies are vital for the livelihoods and well-being of thousands of people. While protest is a right, damaging sources of employment, stability, and growth cannot be tolerated,” he added.

Company representatives expressed concerns over the damage and security threats faced by their businesses.

IGP Baharul Alam responded, “We’re here not only to act but to foster trust and ensure such incidents are not repeated. The emergency hotline will provide a direct line for affected companies to reach law enforcement for swift help.”

During the meeting, BIDA, police, and business associations collaboratively devised a preventive action plan, including enhanced security measures, rapid response teams, and real-time communication protocols during emergencies.

“This discussion goes beyond a reactive approach—it’s a proactive strategy to minimize future risks,” said Ashik Mahmud.

“Above all, it showcases the government’s firm stance—we will support investors not only in times of progress but also during crises,” he added.

Multinational representatives at the meeting appreciated the police’s prompt response and BIDA’s continued support, expressing their commitment to maintaining operations in Bangladesh and exploring future investments.
