Lightning Strikes Kill Six in Cumilla, Netrokona, and Sunamganj

Lightning strikes have claimed six lives across the districts of Cumilla, Netrokona, and Sunamganj.

In Cumilla, two farmers and two students lost their lives, according to police and local witnesses. In Muradnagar’s Kurbanpur area, farmers Nikhil Debnath and Jewel (identified by a single name) were working in a paddy field next to a graveyard when lightning struck them, killing both on the spot, said Bangara Police Station chief Mahfuzur Rahman.

Meanwhile, in Barura’s Haripur, several teenagers were flying kites in a field in front of the Karigari Girls High School, said Saiful Islam Biplob, a teacher at Payalgachha Bahumukhi High School. A lightning strike hit Farhad Hossain and Saimon Hossain, both students, killing them instantly. Another teenager was critically injured and rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, according to witnesses.

In Sunamganj, a college student was killed by a lightning strike around 7:30am while tending cows in a Haor (wetland) area in Shalla Upazila, said Shafiqul Islam, the local police station chief.

In Netrokona, a madrasa student died after being struck by lightning around 6:15am, according to Motahar Hossain, a member of the Teosree Union Parishad.
