Five people, including a father and his son, were killed by a covered van in the Begaritala area of Manirampur Upazila of Jashore on Friday. The accident occurred when the covered van lost control and rammed into a roadside eatery.
The deceased are Habibur Rahman (55) and his son Taushid Hossain (7) of Tuniaghara village of Manirampur Upazila, Mir Samsur Rahman (60) and Tauhidur Rahman (38) of the same village and Ziarul Islam (35), son of Abdul Momin of Jaipur village. Habibur Rahman was a farmer, and Mir Samsur Rahman, Tauhidur Rahman, and Ziarul Islam were day laborers.
Just before the accident, the owner of the hotel was taking the paratha from inside the hotel and was going to give it to a customer at the front. He said Habibur Rahman and his son Taushid Hossain came to this hotel to have breakfast around 7:30 am. Mir Samsur Rahman and Touhidur Rahman had breakfast at the hotel and were talking at the tea shop of Nurul Amin. Ziarul Islam was standing in front of the counter to pay the bill after having breakfast at the hotel.
Suddenly, a covered van lost control, hit some shops on the highway, and entered the hotel. He ran to the back of the hotel in fear. A covered van killed five people in front of their eyes. He had a narrow escape. However, his hotel has been destroyed. He suffered a loss of around Tk 20 lakh.
Police said five people were killed on the spot as a covered van lost control and entered a nearby hotel. The covered van has been impounded. However, the driver and the driver’s assistant escaped. Legal action in this regard is under process.
