Nasrul Hamid, the state minister for power, energy, and mineral resources, stated today that the government is now receiving offers for deep-sea exploration and considered the increase in gas prices as a blessing for Bangladesh.
The minister spoke at a conference on “Energy Transition: Global Context and Bangladesh” held in the nation’s capital and organised by the Forum for Energy Reporters Bangladesh (FERB).
“Before, no party could be located. Why we didn’t (the government) pursue deep-sea exploration was the question posed by energy expert Badrul Imam in an opinion piece that appeared in The Daily Star. Due to the meager price of gas at the time we released the tender, there was no party.”
The minister added that the government would let the private sector enter the market for petroleum products. According to him, private businesses could import fuel on their own and sell their goods at existing gas stations or through their own retail locations.
Hamid added that Bangladesh is also considering a new fuel mix for power generation as the world enters a phase of energy transformation.
“The people’s ability to pay is our top priority. Next June, approximately 1,000 MW of diesel-fired power facilities will be phased down and not renewed,” said he.
