One person was killed in a clash between the police and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) men at Nayapaltan in Dhaka on Wednesday. Initially, it was known that the deceased was Maqbul Ahmed. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a bloody state and declared dead by the doctor on duty.
According to hospital sources, eight people injured in the Nayapaltan clash were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Maqbul died among them.
Sources at Dhaka Medical College correspondent said Maqbul was taken to the hospital in a bloody condition by a pedestrian. He saw Maqbul lying in a bloody state on the road and took him to the hospital.
Police clashed with BNP leaders and activists at Nayapaltan around 3pm on Wednesday. Around 4:30 pm, the police started raiding the central office of the BNP.
Earlier in the morning, the leaders and activists of the party started gathering in front of the BNP office in Nayapaltan. At one point, the gathering became so large that one side of the road was about to be blocked. When the police tried to diverge them, a chase started between the two sides. At one stage of the clash, the police fired shotguns and tear gas shells. Many people were injured in this incident. BNP claimed that the police detained several of them.
The Motijheel Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told the media, “The clash started when the meeting place was being discussed. BNP leaders and activists started gathering at Paltan today. At one point, the entire road was blocked. We repeatedly request them to leave. But they didn’t listen to us. When we tried to remove them, they attacked us.”
However, the Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, said that the firing by the police on the leaders and activists of the party was pre-planned by the government.
