Jennifer Lopez paid tribute to Selena Quintanilla 25 years after becoming a household name after portraying her in a biopic. The 53-year-old A-lister – who recently talked about her tough upbringing – was seen rocking a Selena T-Shirt while on a shopping outing at Cost Plus World Market with family on Monday.
Her Selena top was black garment-dyed faux vintage and featured the Tejano music legend singing into a microphone. Jennifer dripped in gold as she accessorized with large hoop earrings, chain bracelet, rings, aviator shades, and carried along a brown suede designer bag with gold hardware.
Her brunette tresses were put up in a bun as she showcased her natural looks with complementary make-up. Jennifer was not alone for the outing a the specialty retail store as she was joined by 14-year-old daughter Emme.
They were also joined by J-Lo’s 51-year-old sister Lynda Lopez and her 14-year-old daughter Lucie. Jennifer had just a handful of movie roles to her name when she was cast as the iconic Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla for the 1997 biopic.
Selena Quintanilla was one of the most celebrated Mexican artists of the 20th Century, dubbed the Queen of Tejano Music, a musical style that blends Mexican and American influences, which was brought into the mainstream with Selena’s music.
The singer was on the cusp of global stardom – becoming the first Tejano singer to win a Grammy in 1994 – when she was murdered by Yolanda Saldivar, the manager of her fan club and boutiques, who was discovered to be embezzling money from her, in March 1995.
Back in March, J-Lo took to Instagram to share some clips from the movie and other interviews discussing the role jumpstarted her legendary career.
‘What a very special day … we’re celebrating 25 years of SELENA! Today we celebrate and honor Selena’s legacy and music,’ Lopez began.’
This movie means so much to me … Selena and her family mean so much to me, and I was so lucky to be chosen to play her,’ she added.
‘I’ll never forget this time in my life, and it’s an honor as an artist to have been part of the magic that is this movie,’ Lopez concluded.
