Metropolis Report-
Haji Salim, a former Awami League lawmaker who was receiving treatment in a BSMMU jail cell, has been released on bail.
According to the Dhaka Central Jail Deputy Jailer, his bail documents were delivered to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) on Tuesday (17 January).
Haji was met with a flower garland by Awami League leaders and activists as he left the hospital.
In a corruption case, he received bail earlier that day, on December 6, from the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division.
After being found guilty of the graft accusations brought by the Anti-Corruption Commission, he was given a ten-year sentence.
For unlawfully acquiring wealth, ACC filed a case against Haji Salim at the Lalbagh Police Station in 2007. A Dhaka court condemned him to 13 years in prison and a Tk20 lakh punishment on April 27, 2008. Salim appealed the decision to the High Court (HC).
The court overturned his sentence in 2011, but the ACC challenged the decision.
