Wikipedia has reportedly been blocked in Pakistan due to blasphemous content on the website. The government’s directive for the site to remove offensive content within 48 hours and the country’s telecom authority to degrade its services led to the ban.
Although Wikipedia is still in discussions with Pakistani authorities, it is not yet obvious what Wikipedia is being asked to remove, reports Bloomberg.
The nation reportedly restricts websites with content it deems blasphemous, anti-Islamic, or threatening to internal security, according to research by the OpenNet Initiative.
In the past, Pakistan restricted a number of important websites. Due to complaints about immoral/indecent content being shared on TikTok, it also banned TikTok for three years in 2020 and 2021.
