Mohammad Rassel, the CEO of the e-commerce startup Evaly, was granted bail by a Dhaka court on Monday in five cases involving alleged check fraud.
Additional Judge Munira Sultana of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court issued the directive.
According to Rassel’s attorney Fancy Khan, Rasedduzzaman of the Tangail Sadar Upazila filed five lawsuits in 2022 over the theft of five checks totaling TK47 lakh.
On Monday, Rassel was brought into Tangail court from Kashimpur jail for the cases.
Later, attorneys Fancy Khan and Humayun Kabir submitted bail petitions in two and three cases, respectively. In each of those five cases, Rassel was given bail by the court.
In a case reported to Gulshan police station on September 16, 2021, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Evaly CEO Rassel and his wife Nasrin during a search at their Mohammadpur apartment in the capital. They were accused of embezzling money from consumers.
This followed the decision by the commerce ministry on September 14 to ask the home ministry to file a lawsuit against Evaly for breaking the law and misleading customers.
