Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated at the G20 leaders’ conference on Saturday in New Delhi that “there is a lot of hard work” to be done before the UK and India reach a trade agreement.
“There is a desire on both of our parts to see a successful trade deal concluded,” Sunak told UK reporters at the occasion.
Although more hard work still needs to be done, he continued, “the opportunities are there for both countries.”
The two nations have been discussing a post-Brexit trade agreement for over two years, but they have fallen behind schedule several times.
The pact is crucial for Britain as it looks for new markets after leaving the EU in 2020. Talks, it is said, have previously stalled because the ruling Conservatives were concerned that it might result in a rise in immigration.
Sunak’s parents are of pre-independence Punjabi descent from northern British India; they were born in the Indian diaspora in East Africa.
He is married to Akshata Murty, an Indian woman whose father helped build the IT giant Infosys.
