According to a preliminary government tally, a strong earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday resulted in over 1000 fatalities, sending panicked locals fleeing their houses in the middle of the night.
The 6.8-magnitude earthquake was reported to have occurred at 11:11 pm (2211 GMT) 72 kilometers (about 45 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, a popular tourist destination.
