Aman farmers may face a significant loss if the flood situation in Lalmonirhat and Kurigram does not improve within days. The Teesta River’s water level is 30cm above the danger level at Kaunia in Rangpur, but it is flowing below the danger level at Dalia of Teesta Barrage.
Char areas in Rajarhat, Ulipur, and Chilmari upazilas of Kurigram have gone underwater. Other rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are rising but still below the danger level.
If no heavy rain and onrush hilly water from India, the Teesta water level will drop. Around 50,000 people are stranded in 100 chars and riverside villages in 22 unions of eight upazilas in Lalmonirhat and Kurigram.
Many flood-affected people, along with their livestock and essentials, have taken shelter on roads and dykes. A large amount of Aman paddy fields have been submerged in Teesta char areas, and the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is fearing a huge loss.
Dry food and drinking water are being distributed among the flood-hit people on the chars of the Teesta.
