Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce live translation capabilities to its AirPods, according to a recent Bloomberg report.
This feature, set to be integrated into iOS 19—the upcoming version of Apple’s operating system—will allow users to translate conversations in real time. The move comes as Apple lags behind its competitors in bringing live translation to wireless earbuds.
Google was the first to introduce this feature with its Pixel Buds in 2017, later expanding it to the Pixel Buds Pro in 2022. Other tech companies, including Meta and Humane, have also attempted to create similar real-time translation tools for wearable devices, though with varying success.
According to Bloomberg, Apple’s approach will enable a conversation to be translated by playing the real-time translation directly into the AirPods. For example, if a Spanish speaker converses with an English speaker, the translated speech will be heard by the English speaker through their AirPods. When the English speaker responds, their iPhone will play the Spanish translation via its speakers.
Apple has yet to officially confirm the development of this feature. The report emerges amidst delays in the rollout of an AI-enhanced Siri, which Apple recently acknowledged would take longer than originally anticipated. Apple is also said to be planning a major redesign of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS this year as it continues to advance its AI and software capabilities.
