Argentina was leading 2-0 against the Netherlands. Despite losing to Saudi Arabia in the first match of the group stage, they turned around.
Here, however, there was no opportunity to turn around. They would be knocked out once beaten. Even with a 2-0 lead, the pressure was on. Substitute Weghorst equalized with two goals. The match went into extra time. There was no result of the game either.
Adroit goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved Argentina in the first two shots in the tiebreaker.
Argentina eventually won the tiebreaker 4-3. This is Lionel Messi’s last World Cup. His last chance.
