A fire that started in the Balukhali Rohingya camp in Ukhiya of Cox’s Bazar has destroyed at least 2,000 shanties. According to APBn-8 Police, the fire broke out at 3 pm on Sunday in block-B of camp-11 and quickly spread to camps-9 and 10.
The fire was put out around 5:17 pm by ten units of firefighters from the Ukhiya and Teknaf fire stations, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters media cell.
According to Ukhiya Police, the fire was difficult to contain since there were cylinders in every shack, which led to the fire spreading to a large area. Police stated that it was still too early to determine the cause of the fire.
Rohingya camp residents described the fire event as being preplanned. They asserted that the camps were set on fire by Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) members.
On March 22, 2021, a large fire raged across the Balukhali refugee camp, leaving at least 11 people dead and more than 500 injured.
