Metropolis Desk-
2,327 new dengue cases have been registered in August, more than all of last year combined. Dengue deaths in August topped the 281 recorded in the same month last year, bringing the total since January to 548.
Experts blame the casual approach of authorities for the rise in cases and deaths this year. The casual approach of city corporations contributed to the increased breeding of the Aedes mosquito, which is the carrier of the dengue virus.
Climate change has also made Bangladesh dengue-prone throughout the year. A government survey in Gazipur and Narayanganj found numerous Aedes breeding grounds, with high density and continuous rain creating more breeding grounds.
The lack of proper surveillance in district towns has been a major failure this year. City corporation officials and residents share the responsibility to curb mosquito infestation by creating awareness, cleaning houses, and eliminating potential breeding grounds.
At least 11 more people died from dengue and 2,327 people infected by the disease were hospitalized in 24 hours.
