Aung San Suu Kyi, a former leader of Myanmar, has had five of the 19 accusations made against her dismissed. Her 33-year prison term will be reduced by six years by the pardon, which is part of a seasonal amnesty.
After having two of his charges dropped, former president Win Myint, who was overthrown with Ms. Suu Kyi, also obtained a reduced jail term. Although periodic amnesties have been announced before, Ms. Suu Kyi and Mr. Myint were not previously included.
Other concessions have been made by the military junta in what appears to be an effort to restart diplomatic operations that have stopped.
Ms. Suu Kyi was transferred from prison to house detention in the nation’s capital, Nay Pyi Taw, last week.
Since the coup that toppled the 78-year-old Nobel laureate in February 2021, she has been imprisoned by the military.
The coup started the nation’s civil war, which claimed thousands of lives. The military junta has additionally been charged with using excessive violence against people who disagree with its rule.
China and Thailand are two nations that have initiated talks with the junta, but critics of these efforts point out that they left out Ms. Suu Kyi’s party, which won a resounding victory in the 2020 elections.
The military claimed electoral fraud as a result of the size of the victory, which they then used as grounds for the coup.
Ms. Suu Kyi would almost probably need to participate in any negotiations for a settlement with the international community. However, ever since her detention following the coup, she has been kept in isolation. Almost two years had passed since there had been any news about her condition.
The convictions for the other offenses, which include election fraud and corruption, are being challenged by Ms. Suu Kyi. She was accused of everything, which she has refuted, in military-run tribunals that were conducted behind closed doors. Rights organizations have denounced the court cases as being a fraud.
Following its coup two years ago, the military junta on Monday postponed an election that was supposed to take place by August of this year.
