The world has been suffering extreme heat, with June recording the highest worldwide average temperature ever.
In May and June, Bangladesh, a country in the eastern and northern hemispheres, too experienced heat waves.
In June, the country’s rainfall was 16% below average, and this month’s precipitation is forecast to be below average as well.
The amount of rainfall was 67% below average as of the middle of this month.
Heatwaves and drought-like conditions have already had an impact on Bangladesh’s agriculture sector, making it difficult to grow summer vegetables like green chili and the Aus crop.
The retting of jute, a cash crop, is also impacted by the lack of rain this year.
The world is currently transitioning towards a new phase of the El Nio climatic trend, which is characterized by an increase in ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
El Nio episodes typically last nine to twelve months and happen on average every two to seven years.
