Metropolis report –
Bangladesh will become a member of the New Development Bank (BRICS) in August this year.
Minister of Foreign Affairs AK Abdul Momen explained to reporters the outcome of the meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa in the Palais des Nations bilateral meeting room.
He said BRICS Bank had invited Bangladesh as a guest, adding that it would invite Bangladesh to participate in the future.
“The talks will be held in South Africa in August and the Prime Minister will also visit there,” he said.
BRICS currently has five members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Eight more countries will be accepted as members in the future.
“This will be another area of our fundraising. We need money, so that would be good for us,” he said.
The Prime Minister asked South Africa to set up a mission to Bangladesh to improve bilateral cooperation. Earlier, the President of Malta, Dr. George Vera, visited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the same location.
Hasina asked him to open a mission in Dhaka. She also urged Malta to import RMG products and medicines.
She then visited the ILO Director-General, Gilbert F. Humbo, at the same location.
