A tragic road accident in New Jersey claimed the lives of an expatriate Bangladeshi man and his eight-year-old daughter, while his wife remains in critical condition.
The fatal crash occurred on Sunday around 10:15 p.m. on the Interstate-295 Highway in Burlington County, according to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Jeffrey Lebron.
The victims were identified as 36-year-old Sharfu Uddin and his daughter Ramisa, 8, both originally from Farhadnagar in Feni, Bangladesh.
Sharfu’s 26-year-old wife sustained severe injuries and is currently unconscious in a local hospital.
The family was traveling from their home in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Delaware County, Pennsylvania, when the accident happened.
According to witness reports cited by police, Sharfu was driving a Hyundai Tucson with his wife and daughter seated beside him. Meanwhile, a Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by a 29-year-old woman from Florida, lost control, struck a guardrail at high speed, then veered back onto the highway, colliding with Sharfu’s vehicle. Both cars then careened off the road and crashed into a tree.
The Florida driver also sustained critical injuries and was hospitalized.
Members of the Bangladeshi community in New Jersey revealed that Sharfu had immigrated to the U.S. after completing his SSC and HSC exams in Feni. He had been living in New Jersey, where he worked as a fast-food restaurant manager.
On Wednesday, Sharfu and his daughter were laid to rest side by side in New Jersey, with local Bangladeshi community members attending the funeral to pay their respects.
