Police reported that a Bangladeshi man was shot and killed early today at the Rowmari border in Kurigram, allegedly by members of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF).
Around 1:00am, the event happened along the Behular Char border of the Shoulmari union close to Border Pillar 1062-2S.
Manik Mia, 35, of Behular Char village in Rowmari upazila, who passed away, allegedly engaged in cow smuggling, according to police.
10–12 members of a smuggling gang traveled to the Behular Char border at around 1:00 am today, according to police and villagers, to bring in Indian cows.
The 45 Battalion of the BSF, who were border patrolling at the time, opened fire on them from the Kuchnimara camp.
After being shot in the chest, Manik Mia passed away immediately. Later, his friends found the body, according to the police. Rowmari police responded to a tip and went to the scene of the attempted covert burial of Manik’s body this afternoon in the Banchar Char region. They recovered Manik’s body and took it to the police station.
The body of Manik Mia has been transported to the mortuary at Kurigram Sadar Hospital for an autopsy, according to Officers-in-Charge (OC) of Rowmari Police Station Rup Kumar Sarkar.
The police indicated that legal action is being planned in response to the event and that Manik’s associates have fled.
Lt Col Abdullah Al Mashrooqee, the commanding officer of Jamalpur 35 BGB Battalion, told journalists that he had heard about the event but declined to provide any other information.
