Discussions about developments in Bangladesh took place during a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Biden’s residence in Wilmington, Delaware, yesterday.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the leaders exchanged views on the situation in Bangladesh during a media briefing in Washington. Responding to a question from India’s state-owned TV channel Doordarshan, he noted that while discussions covered various regional topics, Bangladesh was specifically mentioned.
This marked the first time Bangladesh was addressed in talks between Modi and Biden since the recent political changes in the country following the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5 due to a student-led movement.
The discussions occurred amid reports that the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Prof Muhammad Yunus, may meet with Biden in the US later this week. However, a potential first in-person meeting between Modi and Yunus will not take place, as Yunus’s visit is scheduled for after Modi’s return to India from his three-day trip to the US.
