Nielsen Gracenote, a data business, has rated Saudi Arabia’s 2-1 victory over Argentina as the biggest shock in World Cup history, surpassing the United States’ victory over England in 1950 as the previous most enormous upset.
The odds of Saudi Arabia, rated 51st, defeating an Argentine squad that has gone undefeated in 36 international matches are 8.7%, according to Gracenote’s own ranking system and complicated methodology.
Some of the most notable upsets, including North Korea’s victory over Italy in 1966 and Cameroon’s victory against Argentina, the reigning champions, in the tournament’s opening game in 1990, failed to crack the top 10 on Gracenote because both underdogs were superior to expectations.
As evidence that they were both stronger teams than initially believed, both of those clubs went on to the quarterfinals.
