BNP Calls for Interim Govt to Conduct National Election by August

The BNP today demanded that the interim government organize the next national election by August this year for the greater good of the country.

“We believe the election can take place in the middle of this year, meaning between July and August,” said party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He made the statement during a press conference at the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan, where he discussed the outcomes of the party’s standing committee meeting held the previous night.

Fakhrul urged the interim government, the Election Commission, and political parties to take necessary actions to ensure the election is held by mid-year.

“There is no reason to delay the election now that the Election Commission has been formed and some stability has been restored in governance,” he said.

The BNP leader also noted that the Election Reform Commission formed by the government is scheduled to present its report on Wednesday.

“So, we do not see any justification for further postponing the elections. The longer the delay, the deeper the political and economic crisis becomes,” he stated.

Fakhrul emphasized that the BNP has long argued there is no alternative to an elected government, as it is the foundation of democracy.
