BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir denied media claims that the party members running in the next elections in Gazipur, Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Barishal are independent candidates.
After laying wreaths at Ziaur Rahman’s grave in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Saturday (29 April), he clarified the situation.
Fakhrul declared, “We have been very clear that we would not be running in any local govt elections.”
“We’ve previously stated that our party won’t run candidates for mayor or commissioner in the city corporation election, in particular.”
He claimed that people aren’t voting since “only 14% of people went to vote in the recently held polls (by-election in Chattogram).”
A free and fair election is therefore not feasible under this government, as everyone in the world is aware, according to Fakhrul.
