Authorities in northern Brazil reported that 10 people had died as a result of a bridge collapse on Friday.
Vehicles and their occupants fell into the water below Sunday when the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge, which spans the states of Maranhao and Tocantins, collapsed.
Another body was discovered Thursday six kilometers (3.7 miles) from the scene of the accident by the Brazilian Navy, which had been conducting rescue operations in the area. On Friday, another victim was discovered in the Tocantins River.
“As such, there are 10 dead and seven missing victims so far,” the Navy said in a statement.
Using a hyperbaric chamber that enabled divers to search depths of over 30 meters (100 feet),
more than 70 rescuers carried on with the search almost a week after the collapse.
Authorities in Brazil warned Tuesday that sulfuric acid being transported by two trucks that fell into the water may have contaminated the Tocantins River. Pesticides were on a third truck that was involved in the collision.
