Canada has conveyed its dissatisfaction regarding the parliamentary election held on January 7, stating that it did not live up to the democratic and free principles that Bangladesh was established on.
Global Affairs Canada urged the relevant authorities to collaborate openly and honestly with all stakeholders to advance democracy, uphold fundamental freedoms, and advance human rights in a way that serves the interests of Bangladesh’s citizens. This call came in a statement released today.
“Canada rejects the acts of violence and intimidation that occurred both before and during the elections and applauds the democratic aspirations of Bangladeshi citizens. We offer our condolences to everyone impacted by the recent acts of violence,” the statement read.
A robust and healthy democracy depends on free and fair elections, a strong opposition, autonomous democratic institutions, and press freedom, the statement said.
“Canada was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, and remains committed to supporting the people of Bangladesh in their aspirations for a more stable, prosperous, and democratic future,” it stated.
