Metropolis Desk-
Ruben Östlund gave Justine Triet’s ‘Anatomy of a Fall,’ a sobering legal drama that purports to examine the guilt or innocence of a well-known novelist (Sandra Hüller), accused of killing her husband, the same award one year after receiving his second Palme d’Or for ‘Triangle of Sadness.’
However, the movie is just as much a probe into their union, bringing personal information about the couple’s private life into the courtroom for the media, general public, and audience to examine, as though under a microscope.
After Jane Campion for ‘The Piano’ and ‘Titane’ director Julia Ducournau, who joined Östlund on the jury this year, Triet is just the third woman to win the Palme d’Or.
Jane Fonda gave the award noting how far Cannes has come since the American actress first visited, breaking a record for female representation with seven female directors competing this year. Triet made a point of acknowledging the protests against the French pension reform that were forbidden from the festival when accepting the medal.
