The Chinese government has blasted US plans to establish a trade agreement with Taiwan and urged Washington to sever all diplomatic ties with the self-governing island nation that Beijing claims as part of its territory.
The deal, which will be inked on Thursday, comes as China is stepping up its efforts to frighten Taiwan by flying fighter jets and bombers close to the island. To show support for Taiwan’s elected government, American and European officials have visited the island nation. After a civil war that resulted in Taiwan’s separation from the mainland in 1949, the Chinese foreign ministry accused Washington of breaking accords governing the island’s status. While there are many informal ties and significant annual trade between the US and Taiwan, there are no formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.
