The Central Intelligence Agency offered buyouts to its entire workforce on Tuesday, aiming to align the agency with U.S. President Donald Trump’s priorities, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
A CIA spokesperson stated that these actions were intended to ensure the agency aligns with the national security goals of new CIA Director John Ratcliffe.
“Director Ratcliffe is moving quickly to ensure the CIA workforce responds to the Administration’s national security priorities. These moves are part of a broader strategy to inject the Agency with renewed energy,” the spokesperson said.
The agency does not disclose its budget or the size of its workforce and did not immediately respond to requests for further comments.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report this news.
The buyout offer aligns with the Trump administration’s broader efforts to overhaul the U.S. government, which has seen the firing and sidelining of hundreds of civil servants as part of a drive to reduce bureaucracy and replace officials with loyalists.
Last week, the White House extended an offer to 2 million civilian full-time federal workers to stop working this week and receive pay and benefits through Sept. 30, as Trump seeks to reduce the size of the government.
Earlier on Tuesday, unions representing U.S. government employees filed a lawsuit to block the Trump administration’s plan to offer buyouts to federal workers.
Ratcliffe, a former U.S. House of Representatives member and Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s first term, was confirmed as CIA Director shortly after Trump began his second term.
