American poet, lyricist, and musician Bob Dylan recently posted a clip from the documentary about the historic “Concert for Bangladesh” on his Facebook page in honor of Independence Month.
The late Beatles guitarist George Harrison and Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar organized the Concert for Bangladesh. George Harrison orchestrated three projects for Bangladesh out of his affection for it. Three of them include the film “The Concert for Bangladesh,” a triple album of concert songs, and the original song “Bangladesh.”
Apple Films screened this movie on March 23, 1972. Since this beautiful occasion celebrated its 51st anniversary yesterday, Bob Dylan recalled the experience in a Facebook post.
On August 1, 1971, a performance was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City to promote awareness of the Liberation War and to raise money for Bangladeshi refugees who had sought asylum in India throughout the war.
At the Concert for Bangladesh, performers included Harrison, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, and the band Badfinger. The concerts drew 40,000 attendees, and UNICEF earned over $250,000 in first gate receipts for help for Bangladesh.
