In the fiscal year 2022–2023, Bangladesh imported grain and food worth Tk 1.05 trillion, but because of the low volume of these imports, the supply of two important commodities fell.
In the fiscal year 2022, 4.54 million tonnes of rice and 4.44 million tonnes of wheat were used. Less of these essentials were available as a result, which had an impact on the market by raising the price of rice and flour.
Nine important agricultural and food grains had an increase in output in Bangladesh, going from 63.4 million tonnes in 2017–18 to 75 million in FY 2023.
In the previous ten years, an average of 36.4 million tonnes of rice and less than 5.0 million tonnes of wheat were consumed.
Even though it exceeded rice consumption, this caused an unusual rise in flour costs.
The nation should create climate-resilient, environmentally friendly agricultural systems, ensuring that everyone has access to the Right to Food Act, improve people-friendly agriculture and food systems, and create multilateral collaborations in agriculture and food systems to achieve food security.
