The arrest of 34 students, including 24 from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), on charges of terrorist activities at Tanguar Haor has raised concerns about wrongful accusation or prompt action.

Judge Farhan Sadiq granted bail to 32 of the arrestees, and a Sunamganj court sentenced them to jail on 1 August. Two of the students were sent to a juvenile court awaiting the verdict.

Police sources claimed the detained students were affiliated with the Islami Chatra Shibir politics and were tipped off to engage in terrorist activities and anti-government plotting.

Advocate Abdul Haque, a lawyer representing the students, said the police failed to provide any reasons for their suspicion towards the group.

The remaining ten individuals were arrested. The arrests were made after their boat was intercepted by police speed boats on their way to the Takkerghat tourist area through the Patlai River.

Parents of the students claim the arrests were wrongful and put their children’s education in jeopardy.
