After making its way across the southern coast of India from the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, Cyclone Fengal killed at least 19 people in India and Sri Lanka and caused flooding in Tamil Nadu state and the Puducherry region.
The weather office in India posted on social media on Sunday that Puducherry had experienced the most intense 24-hour rainfall in 30 years.
Chennai in the south was submerged in water as a result of the cyclone. As of early Sunday morning, flights from the city had resumed after being temporarily halted on Saturday, according to India’s airport authority.
Local media featured images of roads flooded and people being rescued by boats due to strong winds and heavy rain.
While the rainfall in Chennai decreased, the Indian army was conducting relief efforts for those affected by the storm in Puducherry.
The Disaster Management Centre in Colombo recently released data showing that 16 people were killed in Sri Lanka and that 138,944 families were affected by the heavy rains.
