Cyclone Remal Causes Over Tk 26 Crore in Crop Damage in Patuakhali

The Directorate of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of the district reports that Cyclone Remal has caused damage to about Tk 26 crore worth of crops and affected almost 60,000 farmers in Patuakhali.

The Daily Star was informed by Nazrul Islam, the deputy director of Patuakhali DAE, that floods and severe rains have harmed crops on 7,540 hectares of land in the district, valued at Tk 26.21 crore.

In an effort to make up for their losses, 18,200 of the 58,304 impacted farmers will receive free fertilizer and seed incentives this Aman season. Priority incentives would also be given to other impacted farmers, he continued.

DAE authorities state that this year, 1.34 lakh hectares of land in the district were planted with various crop species. 7,540 hectares have suffered significant damage out of this.

570 hectares of boro paddy, 1,043 hectares of aush, 350 hectares of groundnut, 132 hectares of chilli, and 2,391 hectares of mung daal are among the crops that are impacted.

“My mung beans, groundnuts, and boro paddy have been submerged in water for the last three days due to the impact of Cyclone Remal,” stated Md. Hasan, 40, a farmer in Kalaikishore village, Galachipa upazila. Right now he is gathering groundnuts out of the sea.

On his 25 decimals of land, 45-year-old Al Islam, a farmer in the Sadar upazila village of Baloikathi, said he raised mung, chilies, and groundnuts. The storm ruined his chilies and groundnuts.

Nuruzzamal Howladar, 35, another farmer, reported that he planted almonds and chiles on 40 decimals. The crops were harmed by the water that breached the dam due to the intense tidal pressure.
