In order to look into the May 13 murder of Awami League MP Anawarul Azim Anar in Kolkata, Harun Or Rashid, the additional commissioner (detective branch) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), departed the nation for Nepal today.
Lead by Harun, a two-person DB team departed the nation for Nepal early in the morning. Shahidur Rahman Ripon, an additional deputy commissioner of the DB, is another part of the team.
The development was confirmed to The Daily Star today by Abdul Ahad, the deputy commissioner of the Wari division of the DB police.
The squad left for Nepal because there were reports that Siam Hossain, one of the suspects, had fled to hide in the South Asian nation following the mission to kill.
Investigation sources indicated that Siam had a hand in disposing of the deceased lawmaker’s body parts with butcher Jihad Howlader.
Siam was arrested in Nepal, according to a DB source who spoke with this newspaper, after Bangladeshi authorities asked Interpol for help in apprehending him.
Before that, on May 26, a three-person DB team under the direction of Harun traveled to Kolkata to look into the murder. They returned home on Thursday.
In this regard, DB chief Harun informed the media during a briefing on Thursday that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had notified Interpol after gathering various data, including the passports and cell phone numbers of Siam and Akhtaruzzaman, the mastermind and planner who is a US citizen of Bangladeshi descent.
“DB maintains constant communication with the embassies of Bangladesh in the United States and Nepal in an effort to repatriate them. In addition, efforts have been made to secure India’s assistance in repatriating Akhtaruzzaman from the United States,” he stated.
On the other hand, Siam’s arrest or detention in Nepal was not officially confirmed.
The informant claimed that Harun traveled to Nepal in order to help Siam get deported back to Bangladesh for the murder. Due to his travels to Nepal, Harun was not accessible for remark.
