At least one person was killed on Monday after a midsize business jet veered off the runway during landing at Scottsdale Municipal Airport in Arizona and crashed into a stationary jet, according to authorities.
Dave Folio, a spokesperson for the Scottsdale Fire Department, confirmed in a press briefing that at least four others were injured in the collision. One person remained trapped inside one of the jets while rescue teams worked to free them, and three other injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals.
Folio did not release further details, and the cause of the jet skidding off the runway was unclear. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that it was investigating the crash, involving a Learjet 35A that skidded off the runway and collided with a Gulfstream G200 jet.
This incident comes amid increased attention on U.S. aviation safety, as investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are already probing three recent deadly crashes: a midair collision between a passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter in Washington, DC, that claimed 67 lives, a medical jet crash in Philadelphia that killed seven, and a plane crash in Alaska that resulted in 10 fatalities.
