The National Identity Registration Act, 2023, which transfers the Election Commission’s responsibility for issuing national ID cards to the Home Ministry, has been approved by the Cabinet.
A person must register their birth as soon as possible after giving birth, and once they become 18, they will be added to the voter’s list based on their National ID number.
The numbers on people’s present national identity cards will continue to be valid, and under the new law, everyone without a national identity card would be required to register.
In Monday’s cabinet meeting, seven additional bills received final approval and were approved in principle.
